Marketing Memo: How to find & talk to your customers.

3 ways to validate your idea and get your first few sales

I get asked this question a lot:

"How do I find my customers to validate my product and get my first sale? Nobody is responding to me."

So, when I saw this Reddit post this morning, I completely changed my newsletter to answer that question.

I wrote a step-by-step response.

Let's get into it.

There are 3 channels I use to get in front of new audiences for my own product and our customers at Marketing for Founders. LinkedIn, Reddit, and Communities.

LinkedIn

1 - Get sales Nav, even if for just 1 month.

If you want to get 3 free months, find someone with sales Nav and they can give you a referral link.

2 - Search for the most narrow interpretation of your audience.

You have to check “Posted on LinkedIn in last 30 days”.
You don’t want to waste connections and time messaging inactive accounts.

3 - Write copy based on your audience’s stress and anxiety. They don’t care about you or your product.

The example I use for Marketing For Founders:

“Hi [name] are you struggling to know what to do about your marketing? My customers' startups are going to market faster by removing the confusion around marketing efforts & lead gen with hands-on support. Worth a chat?”

Change the context and call to action according to your goal

If you are trying to get feedback, instead of using "My customers..." try "Im building a tool that..."

Reddit

1 - Find the subreddits that align with your
audience. https://www.thehiveindex.com/ is great for finding subreddits & communities (I’ll touch on this next.

2 - Ask questions. Check out my reddit post history. My promotional/direct feedback posts are awful.

When I ask questions people care about, I get A LOT more engagement, and I can have good connections.

3 - Have genuine conversations, give advice, etc., to generate some trust. It will be easier to ask people to give you genuine feedback.

Communities

This is almost the same as Reddit.

Use The Hive Index again.

The only difference is the messaging.

You can be a bit more direct here.

Most communities have spaces dedicated to feedback so maybe you can create a small survey and distribute it there.
